He first enlisted into the Army in 1974, and served for seven and a half years on active duty. He obtained his commission as a Second Lieutenant through the Reserve Officers Training Corp (ROTC) at Fordham University, Bronx, New York, in 1985.
Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Singleton's, last tour of duty was in Laghman, Afghanistan, where he was the Deputy Commanding Officer of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), a unit introduced by the United States Government, consisting of military officers, diplomats, and reconstruction subject matter experts, working to support reconstruction efforts in unstable areas of Afghanistan.
His most recent tour of duty is just one of many military operations he has participated in. Such as, he has supported Operation Desert shield/Desert Storm, served in Operation Joint Endeavor in Bosnia, Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
